Curious Eyes

And after one week I bit the dust with my posts around Toronto International Film Festival. Too tired, also a little tired of the festival, a little unwell too – not really sick, anyway – and after all not completely satisfied with my posts,particularly the language. English is not my native language and you see that, well, I can.

But, ok, the festival ended and it’s now time for a final review. 

First the second week. I saw less screenings, but some highlights:

• New York, I love you. Because it’s a “work in progress” – not finished yet – I am not supposed to report about this one, but let’s say the “tone” of the movie is very pleasant and nice; and also very up to the minute, I saw my first white iPhone 3g in a movie here; no rating (out of competition)
• The Hurt Locker, from “maverick“ Kathryn Bigelow. How close you can get in a feature film to reality, in this case the reality of defusing bombs in Baghdad? Very close, i can tell you.  At the start of the movie – well, not completely the start – you see rocks coming up from the grounds and it’s feeling like you experience yourself the overpressure of the explosion. In the very informative Q&A Kathryn told that that part was shot with a special digital camera (the Phantom) that can shoot about 10.000 frames per second. • A Year Ago in Winter, from 2003 Oscar winner Caroline Link (Nowhere in Africa). “small” movie, beautiful painted, as much in screening as in reality, an splendid leading roles from Karoline Herfurth and Josef Bierbichler. The beautiful portraits created by (yes, that I couldn’t find, an update will follow). Rating ****

Schiphol is geen prettige luchthaven meer. Overal rijen, op donderdagochtend enorme rijeen voor de paspoortcontrole bijvoorbeeld met 4 loketten voor de hele terminal. Wat vroeger charmant was, is nu erg hinderlijk: gemengde passagiersstromen tussen aankomende en vertrekkende passagiers maakt dat het altijd druk is en maakt het ook onmogelijk de veiligheidschecks efficient uit te voeren. Het moet bij het boarden, anders is het niet waterdicht. Dit gecombineerd met het inmiddels erg onpersoonlijke karakter zorgt ervoor, nog meer dan de vliegtax, dat Nederlandse passagiers in grote getale uitwijken naar naburige luchthavens.

Heathrow daarentegen valt alleszins mee. Ik had me daar veel zorgen over gemaakt , maar ik was in no-time door alle checks heen. Nu ja, er zal nog wel 1 check zijn bij het boarden. Ook het vinden van de andere terminals en de afstanden waren geen enkel probleem. Eigenlijk merk ik beide luchthavens dat de checks routine aan het worden zijn, wat naturlijk weer risico’s met zich mee brengt. Maar als geruststelling: op Heathrow is ook de befaamde schoenen check, elukkig wel apart van de andere check , zoadat je nog enigszins overzicht houdt op wat je moet uitdoen. Misschien komt de tijd nog dat je in je ondergoed door de checks moet

Ik vloog met BMI , bomvol, en ik zat midden tussen de GeenStijlgeneratie. Klein voorbeeldje: voor mij vroeg een vrouw met baby of ze aan het gangpad mocht zitten ipv aan het raam. Er zatten twee Hollandse meiden van midden twintig. 1 schoof op, de andere – op de gang plaats- weigerde het, omdat ze “zo snel ziek werd”. Ik bood aan – ik zat ook aan het gangpad – om te ruilen, maar de jongen – 18/19, schat ik – deelde doodleuk mee dat hij geen baby naast zich wilde. Tja. En de crew deed niets, maar ja, het was ook een low cost carrier.

Omdat het nu zo efficient ging,heb ik ruim tijd over en  zit ik nu te lunchen met oesters en champagne. Erg decadent om 11:30 AM local time, maar ja, ik begin mijn vakantie en ik vergeet maar even dat 1 British pound > dan 1 Euro is.  

Zo dadelijk vlieg ik met Virgin Atlantic naar New York. Virgin Atlantic heeft een “premium economy” class met meer ruimte en daar betaal ik graag iets meer voor. Bovendien was het – begin dit jaar, toen ik boekte, ook nog heel goedkoop, zodat ik uiteindelijk nauwelijks meer kwijt was dan in de vreselijke stapelklasse van de KLM.

My first blog from my iPhone. I use the Wordpress app, very basic. So where i can set the signature ” this is a post from the iPhone” like I used to do from my Treo 680? Anyway, I have to accept now that I can’t finish my new website before thursday, the day I go on holiday.  First a renewed acquaintance to New York City, then with Amtrak to Toronto to participate in the International Film Festival. And after that Go West…
